It only needs to be a certain percentage of that grape, the exact percentage varies by regional regulations but is typically 75% or higher.

This Cabernet Sauvignon is one such varietal, made with 15% Malbec.

As a wine geek, I sometimes seek out wines that are absolutely 100% made with a specific variety because it helps me better understand and explore that variety. But as a consumer, who really just wants a wine to be delicious and enjoyable, I don’t mind the augmentation of a varietal wine with a small portion of other grape varieties. After all, the winemaker is doing so in order to enhance the wine. And in the case of this Domaine Bousquet Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, I do think the addition of Malbec has enhanced the wine. It adds a richness and rounds out the flavor profile.

I’ve reviewed a number of wines from Domaine Bousquet in the past and found them to be a good value brand, made with organically-grown grapes. I should point out this is part of their “Reserve” line, which is considered a notch up from their entry-level wines, but is still quite reasonably priced with a suggested retail price of $18.

Wowie, the aromas are powerful on this wine, offering voluptuous cherry, strawberry, blackberry, nutmeg, black pepper and toasted oak fragrances. The flavors are concentrated as well, with rich blackberry, cherry and spice flavors. The acidity is sufficient to add brightness to the wine. The mouthfeel is pleasant. The finish is nice and long, with berry flavors and a touch of bitterness.

Wine: Domaine Bousquet, Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Varieties: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Malbec
Vintage: 2018
Alcohol: 15%
Rating: 87
Average price: $18.00
Disclosure: This wine was received as a media sample.

SUMMARY

The aromas are powerful on this wine, offering voluptuous cherry, strawberry, blackberry, nutmeg, black pepper and toasted oak fragrances.
