Across the border, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, Canada,\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/life\/food_wine\/advice\/2020\/04\/23\/sales-of-boxed-wines-are-through-the-roof-at-the-lcbo-but-which-ones-are-worth-it.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/life\/food_wine\/advice\/2020\/04\/23\/sales-of-boxed-wines-are-through-the-roof-at-the-lcbo-but-which-ones-are-worth-it.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/life\/food_wine\/advice\/2020\/04\/23\/sales-of-boxed-wines-are-through-the-roof-at-the-lcbo-but-which-ones-are-worth-it.html\" aria-label=\"reported that\">reported that<\/a>\u00a0boxed wines were up 77% in March 2020 versus 2019 (that\u2019s 47,000 more boxes sold in a month).<\/p>\n<p>In France, fuelled by the rise in\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.fr\/entry\/pendant-le-confinement-ils-organisent-des-aperos-virtuels-pour-garder-contact_fr_5e73760ac5b6f5b7c53f361b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.fr\/entry\/pendant-le-confinement-ils-organisent-des-aperos-virtuels-pour-garder-contact_fr_5e73760ac5b6f5b7c53f361b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.fr\/entry\/pendant-le-confinement-ils-organisent-des-aperos-virtuels-pour-garder-contact_fr_5e73760ac5b6f5b7c53f361b\" aria-label=\"virtual ap\u00e9ros\">virtual ap\u00e9ros<\/a>\u00a0(virtual drinks) during lockdown,\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.vitisphere.com\/news-91498-Champagne-sales-are-in-lockdown-whilst-boxed-wine-sales-rocket-in-French-supermarkets.htm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vitisphere.com\/news-91498-Champagne-sales-are-in-lockdown-whilst-boxed-wine-sales-rocket-in-French-supermarkets.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.vitisphere.com\/news-91498-Champagne-sales-are-in-lockdown-whilst-boxed-wine-sales-rocket-in-French-supermarkets.htm\" aria-label=\"Nielsen reported\">Nielsen reported<\/a>\u00a0a 43% increase. And across the Channel, with the U.K. still under lockdown, The Mirror published an article recommending the\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/money\/shopping-deals\/best-boxed-wines-you-can-21945274\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/money\/shopping-deals\/best-boxed-wines-you-can-21945274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/money\/shopping-deals\/best-boxed-wines-you-can-21945274\" aria-label=\"best boxed wines you can get delivered to your door\">best boxed wines you can get delivered to your door<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-0-inread\" class=\"show-label\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-google-query-id=\"CLmcjLOS1-kCFf4xuQYdkCMLzA\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/7175\/fdc.forbes\/article-delta-g\/standard\/default\/standard_1__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"embed-base image-embed embed-0\" role=\"presentation\">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/specials-images.forbesimg.com\/imageserve\/174640546\/960x0.jpg?fit=scale\" alt=\"A wine tap in a box\" data-height=\"3964\" data-width=\"3712\" \/><\/div><figcaption>\n<p class=\"color-body light-text\">A wine tap in a box<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Boxed wine still makes sense post-pandemic&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Eric Lanxade is sales director for Caves et Vignobles du Gers in South-West France, which produces 400,000 hectolitres of bulk wine annually. He is certain that this is an upward trend.\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.vitisphere.com\/news-91677-Boxed-wines-stole-the-show-during-lockdown-but-will-they-become-a-hospitality-staple.htm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vitisphere.com\/news-91677-Boxed-wines-stole-the-show-during-lockdown-but-will-they-become-a-hospitality-staple.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.vitisphere.com\/news-91677-Boxed-wines-stole-the-show-during-lockdown-but-will-they-become-a-hospitality-staple.htm\" aria-label=\"Quoted in Vitisphere\">Quoted in Vitisphere<\/a>, he said that business won\u2019t return to usual because of the need to permanently disinfect surfaces. He thinks this \u201c<em>will cause a sea-change in people\u2019s spontaneity towards others and sharing a glass of wine<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Lanxade added that \u201c<em>a bottle goes from one table to the next, from one hand to another and could be a vector of the virus<\/em>\u201d but a big box of wine would solve that problem. Each 750 millilitre bottle generates around 5.2 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions as it travels from California to a New York restaurant or store. A three-litre box generates half the emissions (per 750 millilitres).<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, a box preserves wine for about four weeks compared with only a day or two for a bottle.\u00a0The typical drawback cited by wine\u00a0<em>aficionados<\/em>\u00a0is that the quality is often inferior in boxes. But that looks to be changing&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed-base image-embed embed-3\" role=\"presentation\">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/specials-images.forbesimg.com\/imageserve\/153978270\/960x0.jpg?fit=scale\" alt=\"Boxed wine has a far lower carbon footprint\" data-height=\"4968\" data-width=\"3645\" \/><\/div><figcaption>\n<p class=\"color-body light-text\">Boxed wine has a far lower carbon footprint<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>There are many new brands on the block, who only do boxes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/vinepair.com\/articles\/5-best-boxed-wines-2020\/\" href=\"https:\/\/vinepair.com\/articles\/5-best-boxed-wines-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/vinepair.com\/articles\/5-best-boxed-wines-2020\/\" aria-label=\"According to Vine Pair\">According to Vine Pair<\/a>, boxed wine is no longer relegated to an old-fashioned white zinfandel. Brands such as\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"http:\/\/www.jennyandfrancois.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jennyandfrancois.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:http:\/\/www.jennyandfrancois.com\/\" aria-label=\"jenny and fran\u00e7ois\">jenny and fran\u00e7ois<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.banditwines.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.banditwines.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.banditwines.com\/\" aria-label=\"bandit wines\">bandit wines<\/a>, were well on their way to making boxed wines\u00a0<em>de rigueur<\/em>\u00a0in 2020, before the pandemic hit. These are joined by brands such as\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.blackboxwines.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blackboxwines.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.blackboxwines.com\/\" aria-label=\"Black Box\">Black Box<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bighousewines.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bighousewines.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.bighousewines.com\/\" aria-label=\"Big House\">Big House<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.botabox.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.botabox.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.botabox.com\/\" aria-label=\"Bota Box\">Bota Box<\/a>\u00a0and Wine Cube (found in Target across the U.S.).<\/p>\n<p>In April 2020,\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thedrinksbusiness.com\/2020\/04\/argentinas-first-organic-boxed-wine-goes-on-sale\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrinksbusiness.com\/2020\/04\/argentinas-first-organic-boxed-wine-goes-on-sale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.thedrinksbusiness.com\/2020\/04\/argentinas-first-organic-boxed-wine-goes-on-sale\/\" aria-label=\"Natural Origins released what it claimed to be\">Natural Origins released what it claimed to be<\/a> the first boxed wine from Argentina.
