Dark and inky in the glass, which is no surprise given the malbec\/syrah dominance of this blend, but the aromatic vibrancy is unexpected. That energy carries through to the palate where soaring, fragrant notes sit atop a balanced body framed by crunchy acidity. A big wine that manages to dance with agility.\u00a0 Wow. Really pretty and easygoing. SRP is $20, but you may well find it closer to $15 in your market, which makes it a good value to boot.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-gD3H82FNAaY\/Xk6IZhIdYHI\/AAAAAAAAJZo\/Za0O7Se6BS4zfzIXHHJp1NXCQgGu_TEDQCLcBGAsYHQ\/s1600\/IMG_2139.JPG\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-gD3H82FNAaY\/Xk6IZhIdYHI\/AAAAAAAAJZo\/Za0O7Se6BS4zfzIXHHJp1NXCQgGu_TEDQCLcBGAsYHQ\/s640\/IMG_2139.JPG\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1600\" data-original-width=\"1200\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><b>2017 Domaine de Verqui\u00e8re Rasteau $17<\/b><br \/>\nThis 70\/30 grenache\/syrah is\u00a0 a classic Rhone red showcasing its beautifully-perfumed grenache in a style that&#8217;s midway between classic and modern.\u00a0 Versatile and lovely without being boastful.\u00a0 Well made and tough to put down.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-WwlJiBXm148\/Xk6IZrx4RsI\/AAAAAAAAJZs\/QqMw8AEWjdM63pbZL5ERg-3Hi1Yokxa-QCLcBGAsYHQ\/s1600\/IMG_2140.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-WwlJiBXm148\/Xk6IZrx4RsI\/AAAAAAAAJZs\/QqMw8AEWjdM63pbZL5ERg-3Hi1Yokxa-QCLcBGAsYHQ\/s640\/IMG_2140.JPG\" width=\"304\" height=\"405\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1600\" data-original-width=\"1200\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><b>2017 Conceito Branco &#8216;Contraste&#8217; Douro $14<\/b><br \/>\nPortugal is home to some of the world&#8217;s most sensational white wine values.\u00a0 It&#8217;s such a terrific source that one need only throw a dart (at any price point) to find a winner.\u00a0 This one, however, is a bit weird.\u00a0 Minerals, flint, wet rocks, and a funky fruit element make for a wine that is unlikely to be a crowd-pleaser, but one that wine geeks will spend a lot of time analyzing.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-lkYMYdY4FHs\/Xk6IZste7BI\/AAAAAAAAJZw\/Fd0-k8CNer499tyWe3z1uq0nPwgn3I8eQCLcBGAsYHQ\/s1600\/IMG_2141.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-lkYMYdY4FHs\/Xk6IZste7BI\/AAAAAAAAJZw\/Fd0-k8CNer499tyWe3z1uq0nPwgn3I8eQCLcBGAsYHQ\/s640\/IMG_2141.JPG\" width=\"312\" height=\"416\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1600\" data-original-width=\"1200\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><b>1985 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port $?<\/b><br \/>\nAt 35 years old, the youthfulness and grace of this wine are difficult to fathom.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also hard to imagine that it doesn&#8217;t still have decades of good life ahead of it.\u00a0 After filtering out the considerable sediment, the fruit sits poised in elegant balance with a refined structure and subdued vigor.\u00a0 One more thing that&#8217;s hard to wrap your mind around: you can still find bottles of this stuff out there for under $100.\u00a0 Insane.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-wvDNSHxKOe4\/Xk6IaBXo7mI\/AAAAAAAAJZ0\/-WKXepUTKkQBxGtvKcK-4uixbzDEMfPFgCLcBGAsYHQ\/s1600\/IMG_2142.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-wvDNSHxKOe4\/Xk6IaBXo7mI\/AAAAAAAAJZ0\/-WKXepUTKkQBxGtvKcK-4uixbzDEMfPFgCLcBGAsYHQ\/s640\/IMG_2142.JPG\" width=\"305\" height=\"407\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1024\" data-original-width=\"768\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><b>2016 Montresor Valpolicella Ripasso &#8216;Capitel della Crosara&#8217; $17<\/b><br \/>\nA lot of ripassos attempt to achieve Amarone-like intensity, often missing the mark and ending up flabby and\/or over-heated.\u00a0 Not this one.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a terrific representation of a Valpolicella that leans towards savory while still expressing characterisitc, shining fruit.\u00a0 All this is cloaked in lovely acidity.<\/p>\n<p><b>2017 Bodegas Norton Malbec Reserva $13<\/b><br \/>\nReally nice malbec without the rough edges or sloppy winemaking that plagues so many these days.\u00a0 Picked it up on sale and enjoyed with burgers &#8211; which is exactly what this wine needs.<\/p>\n<p><b>2016 Hess Select Red Blend &#8216;Treo&#8217; California $11<\/b><br \/>\nAnother wine I picked up on a closeout sale.\u00a0 Simple California red blend that&#8217;s appealing for its simplicity, price tag, and lack of overblown extraaction\/alcohol.\u00a0 (Suggested retail is $19, which I would not have paid.)<\/p>\n<p><b>2013 Nipozzano Chianti Ruffina Riserva $15<\/b><br \/>\nAt close to six years old, this is a great lesson in both the longevity of Chianti and the value of looking beyond the Classico zone.\u00a0 A terrific value that offers everything you&#8217;d want in a Chianti: food-friendly acids, moderate body, and a seamless texture.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-jo2nOKswBEc\/Xk6IaVLdkuI\/AAAAAAAAJZ4\/Dp8KZjfBSvY5xF9jaZeoV6veVUJdjbnsQCLcBGAsYHQ\/s1600\/IMG_2143.PNG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-jo2nOKswBEc\/Xk6IaVLdkuI\/AAAAAAAAJZ4\/Dp8KZjfBSvY5xF9jaZeoV6veVUJdjbnsQCLcBGAsYHQ\/s640\/IMG_2143.PNG\" width=\"372\" height=\"210\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"640\" data-original-width=\"1136\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s a total hodgepodge of bottles this week, including an old, old port, a new, fresh malbec\/syrah, and a few other odd birds that I picked up on closeout sale.\u00a0 Cheers! 2018 Domaine Bousquet Gaia Red Blend Uco Valley $20 Yowza!
