Believe it or not, conventionally-made wine does not always reach the great taste that organic wine provides. Here, we take a look at why organic wine has a superior taste.

Organic wine is consistently rated higher by consumers

In 2016, an article was published in the “Journal of Wine Economics” about wine ratings. The article, titled “Does Organic Wine Taste Better? An Analysis of Experts’ Ratings,” thoroughly analyzed ratings by prestigious wine magazines. The results were astounding. The researchers’ findings answered the question, “does organic wine taste better?” with a resounding yes! The average score of organic wine soared over 4 points higher than the score of the conventional wine.

Traditionally, organic wine taste has gotten a bad reputation. It has vastly improved, however, since its humble beginnings.

Wine artisans continue to find the benefits of using organic practices in their winemaking. The reasons to go organic are simple. Vintners may prefer to harvest their grapes with careful handling and utilize earth-friendly farming practices. Current research implicates just how important producing organically can be.

A recent study at UCLA showed a significant correlation between taste and organic methods. The researchers examined over 74,000 unique wines with over 30 varieties. The wine was surveyed from about 3,500 separate vineyards in California. The taste ratings for organic wine were higher than conventional wine.

The research team at UCLA discovered something else that was very compelling. Critics evaluate wine through a numerical system derived from the overall quality of the wine. In wines that have been eco-certified, results show the wine ratings are notably affected. Eco-certified is the way to go!

Why does organic wine taste different?

It is not known conclusively why the taste of organic wine rates so much more favorably than its non-organic counterpart. It seems likely that the answer lies in the soil quality. The soil is healthier without the presence of chemicals.

Soil that is nurtured with organic farming methods has a rich microbiome that may contribute to a fuller, more robust flavor in the fruit. In the “Organic Wine Journal” and the UCLA study, it is explained how crucial the vine is to flavor:

“Flavors are created in the vine. The building blocks are the minerals in the soil. If you keep applying synthetic chemicals, you are upsetting the minerals in the soil. So if you wish to express true terroir, you should be trying to keep the soil healthy. Let the minerals that are already there express themselves in the flavor in the vine.” –Ron Laughter, vintner.

The minerals are disrupted if chemicals are in the soil. Minerals need to be left alone. This will ensure the flavors will infuse into the vine. Keeping the soil free of chemicals will encourage a rich, flourishing soil microbiome that produces more flavorful fruit and ultimately, more flavorful wine.

Naturally elegant wines at Domaine Bousquet

The pleasures of organic wine are great. The way the grapes are handled, the absence of harsh chemicals and pesticides, and the freedom of the soil which gives the vine great favor are all notable qualities.

There will be more nutrients and flavor in the vine because of the microbes in the soil. The taste of organic wine excels over any typical wine. It is steadily ranked higher.
