OFF THE VINE: Say Merry Christmas with wine

What do most wine lovers want for Christmas, you ask? I suppose a new car, fancy clothes or an exotic vacation destination would be well-received but isn’t that going to extremes? I think you’ll find that giving a bottle of wine is great way to say Merry Christmas. The hard part, however, is selecting just the right bottle from among the vast selection of wines on the market. That’s why once again I’ve put together my annual wine lover’s buying guide. Below you’ll find 10 reds and 10 whites that are widely available and reasonably priced, especially when compared to a new car or vacation. So here’s hoping that your holiday is filled with happiness, joy and of course good wine, cheers.

Reds

Ponzi: 2017 Tavola Pinot Noir, Oregon. Tart and lively with red fruit flavors and clean, sharp acidity. Always a top producer. $22

Louis Martini: 2016, Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon, California. Deep red in color with black cherry and currants. Medium bodied with a smooth, lush feel on the palate. $18

Allegrini: 2015, Pallazo Del Torre, Italy. Ruby red in color with lush flavors of raisins, vanilla, black pepper, cloves and cinnamon. It has a long, velvety finish and soft tannins. $24

Tamarack Cellars: 2017, Cabernet Franc, Washington State. Aromas of raspberry, cranberry and currant jump from the glass. On the palate hints of anise with balanced acidity and brisk tannins. $28

Chateau Malescasse: 2016, Bourdeaux Red, France. Primarily merlot with a deep garnet color and dark fruit flavors that complement the mature tannins. Pairs well with beef, lamb and assorted cheeses. $23

Susanna Balbo: 2017 Signature Malbec, Argentina. Blackberries, blueberries and black cherry aromas are complemented by enticing flavors of plum, berries and bright acidity. The persistent finish is soft and smooth. $24

Bodegas Atteca: 2016, Atteca Grenache, Spain. This is a lot of wine for the money. Cherry and plum flavors are accented by soft tannins, and smoky finish. $17

Santa Ema: 2015, Reserve Merlot, Chile. Deep red color with notes of chocolate and vanilla, along with berries and roasted coffee. On the palate a silky, smooth wine with great structure. $14

Louis Jadot: 2017 Beaujolais Villages, France. Ruby red color with aromas of red fruits, particularly ripe cherry. On the palate, hints of spice along with licorice and sharp acidity. $18

Seghesio: 2017, Sonoma County Zinfandel, California. Aromas of wild blueberry and spice. On the palate juicy, ripe blackberry and plum flavors along with crisp acidity. $21

Whites

Talbott: 2016, Sleepy Hollow Chardonnay, California. Brilliant gold color with abundant flavors of pear, green apple and melon. Full bodied with hints of honey on the plush finish. $42

Kim Crawford: 2017, Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand. Easy on the wallet and delicious tasting with citrus fruit along with sharp acidity. $17

Loosen: 2017, Dr. L. Reisling, Germany. Bright gold color with vibrant peach and melba flavors that are complemented by a dry finish. $13

Schramsberg: Mirabelle Brut NV, California. Green apple and pear flavors make this full-bodied bubbly from Schramsberg a delightful holiday wine. $28

Palmer: NV Brut Reserve Champagne, France. Rich gold color with hints of honeydew melon along with aromas of soft, baked apple and pear on the palate.The finish is smooth and seductive. $60

Lions Head: 2017 Panthera Chardonnay, California. This abundantly rich wine is made from Russian River fruit that offers pear, green apple and melon flavors. A creamy texture and toasty oak enhance the long finish. $45

Celestin Blondeau: 2017 Sancerre (Sauvignon Blanc), France. Crisp and clean with tart green apple and lime flavors that are accentuated by sharp acidity. $22

Domaine Bousquet: 2017, Reserve Chardonnay, Argentina. Tropical fruit and vanilla aromas. Green apple flavors with subtle hints of jasmine. The finish is bold with refreshing acidity. $21

Hermann Wiemer: 2017 Semi-Dry Riesling, New York State. Brilliant gold in color with peach and apricot aromas that help set the tone for the abundant citrus fruit flavors of pineapple, green apple and melon. $22

Campo Viejo: NV Cava Brut Reserva, Spain. This sparkling wine from Spain is greenish yellow in color with a persistent stream of bubbles that rise from the fruit flavors and lively acidity. $14

Wine of the week: 2015, Arnaldo Caprai Montefalco Rosso Riserva,Italy. Ruby red color with abundant ripe fruit flavors that complement the delicate hints of vanilla. $24
